I thought about titling this post “Slacker Blogger Finally Publishes”, but we’re not talking about what I haven’t been doing, but rather what I have and shockingly I managed to read 3 books in the month of May. It’s probably because I have been living in a construction zone for the last 3 months unable or un-motivated to do much else but escape to my room and read.
The first book I read was Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. This will be a very short review because as I teach my kids, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Friends, I started this teeny-tiny book in March and only finished it in May! I picked it up because I was seeing it all over my Instagram feed, home décor bloggers I follow were singing its praises with beautiful images of their newly de-cluttered space, not to mention the fact that it was a #1 New York Times Best seller.
Maybe it’s because I am already a slightly obsessed, neat freak who hates clutter and was expecting this to be my new bible, but I just could not connect and get into the book. Perhaps there is something lost in the translation from Japanese to English, but when the author talks about the proper way to store your socks and says:
“The socks and stockings stored in your drawer are essentially on holiday. . . .The time they spend in your drawer is their only chance to rest.”
She lost me. I stopped reading the book several times (hence why it took me over 2 months to finish) only to pick it up again, determined I would finally get to the “Aha” moment the rest of the world seemed to experience. All I can say is . . .
I. Don’t. Get. It.
My reward for not giving up on the above-mentioned book was to read another book by Elin Hilderbrand. This time I read The Rumor.
If I had to pick a favorite author for right now, it would definitely be Hilderbrand and The Rumor did not disappoint. I love the characters, the coastal setting, and of course the twisting and turning plot. I devoured this book in 2 days and can’t wait to read another of her books!
The 3rd and final book I read in May was Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. I heard this was a great book (also a New York Times Best Seller) and when I saw the movie was coming out soon, I downloaded it to my Kindle and started reading – and basically I did not stop reading for 24 hours. Dinner did not get made, the hubby had no clean pants for work and I barely got Princess Dani to school. I just could not put it down. It. Is. That. Good! I can’t wait to see the movie. I also immediately downloaded the sequel, After You to start reading this weekend.
Have a great week!
