Hooray for Friday! I know pretty much everyone loves Friday, but I especially love it because this Mama does not cook on Friday (or Saturday, and sometimes Sunday)! The hubby and I usually meet for breakfast on Friday mornings but on the occasion that his work interferes with our standing breakfast date (#rude), we meet for lunch and today I am sharing one of our favorite lunch spots – The Carnitas Snack Shack in North Park.
North Park, recently named one of America’s Best Hipster Neighborhoods by Forbes Magazine, is a little community in San Diego known for their great restaurants, bars and coffee shops and the Snack Shack is one of those gems.
The restaurant has a walk-up counter where you place your order and a great outdoor seating area.
Chips and guacamole is pretty much a food group of its own in our house so that was a no brainer, and I’m a sucker for pork belly anything so we started with those two appetizers.
A word of caution – the pork belly “app” is huge! Seriously, that alone could have been my meal. It’s also AHHHHHHMAAAAAAZING! The sweet and spicy glaze they douse the pork in is heaven-sent.
I ordered the carnitas tacos for my main dish and asked them to leave off the pico de gallo (I don’t want veggies messing up my meat!). I can honestly say, it is the best carnitas I have ever had and if you knew how much Mexican food we eat, you would know that’s a bold statement! They don’t skimp on the carnitas either. Each taco is stuffed with savory, juicy carnitas.
The hubby ordered the Triple Threat Pork Sandwich, which is a combination of pork loin schnitzel PLUS carnitas PLUS bacon. It was an ambitious order to say the least! While he didn’t finish it, it was delicious.
We heart the Carnitas’ Snack Shack and I KNOW you will too. The next time you’re looking for a great, simple, no fuss lunch or dinner, definitely go check them out. I would go on a warm sunny day so you can take full advantage of the beautiful patio and the delicious food! You can learn more about the Carnitas’ Snack Shack and San Diego born and raised Chef/Owner Hanis Cavin on their website as well as the cute (and somewhat ironic) origin of the name of their restaurant.
Have a great weekend!
